Lewis, with his characteristic brilliance, reimagines the famous myth of Cupid, an immortal god, and Psyche, a human so beautiful that she attracts the desire and envy of the gods. The author sets his narrative in the fictional kingdom of Glome and subverts the traditional perspective by telling the story from the point of view of Orual, Psyche's rejected sister. Written near the end of his literary career, the book is a demonstration of Lewis's mastery in the art of composition, containing an intricate narrative that deals with envy, guilt, and grief.
